GATE CS 2018 Q22 — Sequential Circuits

Explain with AI

Consider the sequential circuit shown in the figure,  where both flip-flops used are positive edge-triggered D\text{D} flip-flops.

The number of states in the state transition diagram of this circuit that have a transition back to the same state on some value of "in" is ____

Answer: 2

Let the state of the sequential circuit be represented by (Q1,Q0)(Q_1, Q_0), where Q1Q_1 and Q0Q_0 are the outputs of the first and second D flip-flops respectively.

From the circuit diagram, the input equations to the flip-flops are:

D1=Q1⊕Q0D_1 = Q_1 \oplus Q_0D0=Q1⊕inD_0 = Q_1 \oplus \text{in}

Since the next state of a D flip-flop is equal to its input (Q+=DQ^+ = D), the next-state equations are:

Q1+=Q1⊕Q0Q_1^+ = Q_1 \oplus Q_0Q0+=Q1⊕inQ_0^+ = Q_1 \oplus \text{in}

For a state (Q1,Q0)(Q_1, Q_0) to transition back to itself, we require Q1+=Q1Q_1^+ = Q_1 and Q0+=Q0Q_0^+ = Q_0 for some input value in∈{0,1}\text{in} \in \{0, 1\}:

  1. First Condition: Q1+=Q1  ⟹  Q1⊕Q0=Q1  ⟹  Q0=0Q_1^+ = Q_1 \implies Q_1 \oplus Q_0 = Q_1 \implies Q_0 = 0This restricts the candidate states to those where Q0=0Q_0 = 0.
  2. Second Condition: Q0+=Q0  ⟹  Q1⊕in=Q0Q_0^+ = Q_0 \implies Q_1 \oplus \text{in} = Q_0Substituting Q0=0Q_0 = 0 gives:Q1⊕in=0  ⟹  in=Q1Q_1 \oplus \text{in} = 0 \implies \text{in} = Q_1

Thus, for any state with Q0=0Q_0 = 0, we can choose in=Q1\text{in} = Q_1 to transition back to the same state:

  • State (0,0)(0, 0) transitions to itself when in=0\text{in} = 0.
  • State (1,0)(1, 0) transitions to itself when in=1\text{in} = 1.

For states with Q0=1Q_0 = 1, we get Q1+=Q1‾≠Q1Q_1^+ = \overline{Q_1} \neq Q_1, making a self-transition impossible.

Hence, there are exactly 2 such states.
