GATE CS 2014 Set 1 QGA-10 — General Aptitude

Explain with AI
When a point inside of a tetrahedron (a solid with four triangular surfaces) is connected by straight lines to its corners, how many (new) internal planes are created with these lines?
View worked solution

Answer: 6

Let the four vertices of the tetrahedron be A,B,C,A, B, C, and DD. Let the point inside the tetrahedron be PP.

Connecting PP to each of the four corners gives four new line segments: PA,PB,PC,PA, PB, PC, and PDPD.

An internal plane is formed by any two of these intersecting lines. Since all four lines meet at the common point PP, any pair of these lines defines a unique plane.

The number of ways to choose 22 lines out of the 44 lines to form a plane is given by the combination:

(42)=4×32=6\binom{4}{2} = \frac{4 \times 3}{2} = 6

These 66 planes are:

  • Plane PABPAB
  • Plane PACPAC
  • Plane PADPAD
  • Plane PBCPBC
  • Plane PBDPBD
  • Plane PCDPCD

Since PP lies strictly inside the tetrahedron, none of these planes coincide with each other or with the original four boundary faces (ABC,ABD,ACD,BCDABC, ABD, ACD, BCD). Thus, exactly 6 new internal planes are created.
