Answer: D

Let ∠LPQ=θ\angle LPQ = \theta. Since PQRSPQRS is a square, ∠PQR=90∘\angle PQR = 90^\circ.

In the right-angled triangle △PQL\triangle PQL:

PL=PQcos⁡θ=2cos⁡θPL = \frac{PQ}{\cos\theta} = \frac{2}{\cos\theta}

Since PLMNPLMN is a rectangle, the opposite sides PLPL and MNMN are parallel. The width of the rectangle, PNPN, is the perpendicular distance between these two parallel lines.

The line MNMN passes through the corner SS. Since ∠SPQ=90∘\angle SPQ = 90^\circ, the angle between PSPS and PLPL is 90∘−θ90^\circ - \theta. Therefore, the perpendicular distance from PP to the line MNMN is:

PN=PSsin⁡(90∘−θ)=2cos⁡θPN = PS \sin(90^\circ - \theta) = 2 \cos\theta

The area of the rectangle PLMNPLMN is given by:

Area=PL×PN=(2cos⁡θ)×(2cos⁡θ)=4 cm2\text{Area} = PL \times PN = \left(\frac{2}{\cos\theta}\right) \times (2 \cos\theta) = 4\text{ cm}^2
