GATE CS 2010 Q62 — General Aptitude

Explain with AI

Hari(H), Gita(G), Irfan(I) and Saira(S) are siblings (i.e., brothers and sisters). All were born on 1st1^{\text{st}} January. The age difference between any two successive siblings (that is born one after another) is less than three years. Given the following facts:

  1. Hari's age ++ Gita's age >> Irfan's age ++ Saira's age
  2. The age difference between Gita and Saira is one year. However Gita is not the oldest and Saira is not the youngest.
  3. There are no twins.

In what order they were born (oldest first)?

Answer: B

Let the ages of Hari, Gita, Irfan, and Saira be H,G,I,H, G, I, and SS respectively. Since all siblings were born on 1st1^{\text{st}} January and there are no twins, their ages are distinct integers.

From Fact (ii), the age difference between Gita and Saira is exactly 11 year. This means Gita and Saira must be adjacent in the birth order. This immediately eliminates Option A (where Irfan is between Saira and Gita).

Now, let us test the remaining options using Fact (i): H+G>I+SH + G > I + S, which can be rewritten as:

G−S>I−HG - S > I - H
  • Option B (SGHI): The birth order from oldest to youngest is S>G>H>IS > G > H > I. Since SS and GG are adjacent, S−G=1  ⟹  G−S=−1S - G = 1 \implies G - S = -1. Substituting this into our inequality gives −1>I−H-1 > I - H, which means H−I>1H - I > 1. Since H>IH > I, this is easily satisfied if the age difference between HH and II is 22 years (e.g., ages S=14,G=13,H=12,I=10S=14, G=13, H=12, I=10). This is perfectly valid.
  • Option C (IGSH): The birth order is I>G>S>HI > G > S > H. Here, G−S=1G - S = 1. The inequality becomes 1>I−H  ⟹  I−H<11 > I - H \implies I - H < 1. But since II is older than HH with two siblings in between, I−HI - H must be at least 33, which is a contradiction.
  • Option D (IHSG): The birth order is I>H>S>GI > H > S > G. Here, S−G=1  ⟹  G−S=−1S - G = 1 \implies G - S = -1. The inequality becomes −1>I−H  ⟹  I−H<−1-1 > I - H \implies I - H < -1. But since I>HI > H, I−HI - H must be positive, which is a contradiction.

Thus, the correct birth order from oldest to youngest is SGHI.
