GATE CS 2014 Set 2 Q26 — Packet, Circuit and Virtual Circuit Switching

Explain with AI

Consider the store and forward packet switched network given below. Assume that the bandwidth of each link is 10610^6 bytes / sec. A user on host AA sends a file of size 10310^3 bytes to host BB through routers R1R1 and R2R2 in three different ways. In the first case a single packet containing the complete file is transmitted from AA to BB. In the second case, the file is split into 1010 equal parts, and these packets are transmitted from AA to BB. In the third case, the file is split into 2020 equal parts and these packets are sent from AA to BB. Each packet contains 100100 bytes of header information along with the user data. Consider only transmission time and ignore processing, queuing and propagation delays. Also assume that there are no errors during transmission. Let T1T1, T2T2 and T3T3 be the times taken to transmit the file in the first, second and third case respectively. Which one of the following is CORRECT?

Answer: D

The network consists of 3 hops (A→R1→R2→BA \to R1 \to R2 \to B), so the number of links is k=3k = 3. The bandwidth of each link is B=106B = 10^6 bytes/sec. The total transmission time for sending nn packets over kk hops is given by:

T=(n+k−1)×tT = (n + k - 1) \times t

where tt is the transmission delay of a single packet on one link, t=Packet SizeBt = \frac{\text{Packet Size}}{B}.

  • Case 1 (T1T1): Single packet containing the complete file.
    • Data size = 10001000 bytes, Header = 100100 bytes   ⟹  \implies Packet size = 11001100 bytes.
    • Number of packets, n=1n = 1.
    • T1=(1+3−1)×1100106=3×1.1 ms=3.3 msT1 = (1 + 3 - 1) \times \frac{1100}{10^6} = 3 \times 1.1\text{ ms} = 3.3\text{ ms}.
  • Case 2 (T2T2): File split into 1010 equal parts.
    • Data size per packet = 100100 bytes, Header = 100100 bytes   ⟹  \implies Packet size = 200200 bytes.
    • Number of packets, n=10n = 10.
    • T2=(10+3−1)×200106=12×0.2 ms=2.4 msT2 = (10 + 3 - 1) \times \frac{200}{10^6} = 12 \times 0.2\text{ ms} = 2.4\text{ ms}.
  • Case 3 (T3T3): File split into 2020 equal parts.
    • Data size per packet = 5050 bytes, Header = 100100 bytes   ⟹  \implies Packet size = 150150 bytes.
    • Number of packets, n=20n = 20.
    • T3=(20+3−1)×150106=22×0.15 ms=3.3 msT3 = (20 + 3 - 1) \times \frac{150}{10^6} = 22 \times 0.15\text{ ms} = 3.3\text{ ms}.

Comparing the transmission times, we get T1=T3T1 = T3 and T3>T2T3 > T2.
